Hi,

Anyone on here regularly use an AMG GTR for track days?

They look like a good option at the price as I fancy a change from my GT3 which has been good and durable as a road and track combination.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a GTR at track day, trying to find out if there is a reason for this?

What tires are people running on these?

Any braking upgrades needed?

Thank you all

Hello, I dont own a GTR so I dont regularly track one... I have however driven a couple and sold a couple when they were fairly new.

They are very different to your GT3, but a very very good car all the same. The GT3 is more pin sharp, clinical whereas the GTR is sharp but very dramatic and more rowdy. If I wanted to chase lap times id take the GT3, if I wanted to have a lot of fun doing it id take the GTR. The V8 sound alone is enough to make hairs stand on end!

My friend and I were discussing the other evening that we think the GTR is one of the biggest used bargains at the moment. We were both selling them at 140k+ and customers would be super pleased with their purchases. Now they are sub 100k they are super tempting propositions... if we had the cash!

Most use Pilot Super Sport tyres, much the same as many GT3s do. The rear tyre width is massive though!!

Id try to get a track pack (bucket seats, cage, harnesses etc) if you plan to regularly use on track. They are all pretty focused but they can do road trips in relative comfort as well. The sill is pretty wide in comparison to a 911 though, you have to learn the nack of getting in.

Any other questions let me know, BB

Thanks for your reply BB

I’m ok with it being a different proposition to a gt3, just a bit perplexed as to why I never seem to see that out at tracks given the value proposition.

Any specialist that are good for this type of car? Imagine dealing with a Mercedes main dealer for track prep bits would be painful

Biggest reason in my opinion is the Merc will take more effort and skill to drive quickly around a track. The 911 will make it feel easy. (Personally I'd rather challenge myself and enjoy drama... hence owning a TVR biggrin )

Id also say an AMG Merc owner is very different to the normal Porsche owner. I cant say I ever heard any Merc customer talking about tracking a car, it was much more about weekend use, road trips onto the continent/North of Scotland or prowling around town on a friday night...

I'd also say most of the GTR owners I met were bikers and also had an Aston in the garage.

Oh, and they make a LOT more 911s than AMG GT, the GT was a genuinely hand built, low volume car. Its like comparing a G Wagon to a Range Rover, both are good, both do what the customers want but you see a lot more RR.

Id imagine most specialists would be able to look after you. As I say, as a Merc dealer we never had anyone ask to track prep a car, then again I cant imagine a GTR would need much prep more than a standard AMG once over... we were an AMG and Merc Classic specialist dealer though so got to look after all the local pre merger AMGs, Brabus models, Pagoda, SLR, SLS etc.

Id go to have a look at one of you can. They feel more special than a 911... I'm fully prepared to get hate for that comment biggrin Im more than happy to help with any questions, I loved my time in a Merc dealer!

Ran a 750hp renntech on about 12 track dys in total, europe and uk, 40k miles in total as did some euro trips to (mine was a roadster)

they’re very good, much quicker than a gt3 in that spec, driving position very different, completely bullet proof, carbon ceramics an absolute must but werent standard and not many specced them.

Blind crested corners are interesting with the long bonnet but you get used to it, gearbox oil changed every 10k miles because of the hp hike, was fine by the time i let it go.

Monster torque! one of the best cars ive owned, really took a hammering well.

You’re welcome smile

I had a 2018 GT-R and did indeed take it on the track. My over-riding impression was that for the size of the track (it was relatively small, and about a 1 min lap), the car was a bit too big.

It lasted the day without any issues at all, didn't have any hiccups, although the brakes faded a bit during the day (it was also a very hot day, which didn't help), but everything held together. Would something else be more fun? I would say yes, definitely. On a track the size it was, a Cayman sized car would be more fun, have more agility around the corners etc. Whether that transfers to a bigger track, sadly I won't be able to tell you!

Maybe you’re thinking of the new GT? Proper heffer that one

GT3 - 1430kg (ish)
GTR - 1550kg (ish)

So not much in it..

Loads more torque from the turbo unit in the gtr, getting out of corners the gt3 gets it but the gtr easily makes it up on the straights, spa particularly the gtr has the gt3 licked, smaller tracks the gt3 has the edge.

Stage 1 gtr needs a gt3rs to keep it honest

Yeh you are kinda right & me fairly wrong.

Road & track weighed a GTR at 1663kg
Early GT3Rs in 1350kg area, later ones 1450kg

So yip I was a fair way off, 200-300kg in it depending vs what GT3 & less for a non RS I was indeed thinking of the 1900kg later GT

No worries.. Always find Harry's ‘actual’ weigh ins interesting on his YT channel, think its was the Aventador that actually came in under weight when he had it in, italians are light on power and weight figures it seems smile

Same era 2017 gt3 vs gtr track time comparisons sort of tie in with what i was saying in regard to track size.

I do quite a few trackdays at Goodwood.

I have seen an AMG GTS track very successfully. There is an AMG GTR that is also tracked quite regularly and I've had a few passenger laps in it. I seem to recall it was pushing 165mph down the Lavant straight.

I think as with any trackday or track car, the overall lap performance will depend on the experience/skill of the driver and the specific knowledge of a circuit.

Some Goodwood trackdays can seem like the 'GT3 Owners Club' - but not all owners are equally talented!!

The AMG GTs attract way more attention than the Porsches on track, IMO.
