E400d occasional smell?

I have had a 2019 E400d Estate for about a month / 1,000 miles. It's my first Merc, an AUC from Mercedes, it was a demonstrator.

On 3 occasions now I have noticed hot air and a mild burn smell when getting out of the car. I have not yet identified a correlation between this and the type / length of journey or manner of driving.

Any ideas what this will be?

I am not technically minded but assume it's something to do with an exhaust clean-up / regen taking place as I'm coming to the journey's end.

Any feedback appreciated.

DPF regen would be my guess as well.

Put your hand near each wheel to check for excessive heat which might be a sticking brake caliper.

I did wonder about a sticking brake caliper, the first time it occurred I did as you say and the warmth was even on each side at the front. Car runs very well, rolls easily on a trailing throttle, and with the only occasional incidence I think the brakes are OK.

DPF regen - my S213 220d does exactly the same. I spoke to Mercedes about these symptoms a couple of weeks ago and confirmed this.

Perfectly normal. When I got my 220d it did this weekly for the first couple of months I had it, I put it down to it being a low mileage car that hadn't seen many long journeys for a while.

I never noticed it doing it when I was doing my normal 1000-1500 miles a month.

It noticed it did it last week when I got home - I've not done many miles, and no long trips at all the last few months.

I other thing I've noticed is the fuel consumption tends to be higher than normal bit on the first trip after you fill it up - I'd put that down to it holding off doing a regen when low on fuel.

The newer engines have the DPF very close to the engine, so they don't always need to do an active regen injecting extra fuel if you do a lot of long runs.
