Again.

This is on my 2009 E350cdi coupe. Generally gets used these days for 15-20mins runs to work and fairly infrequent longer runs.

Couple of months back I drove to Bristol. On the way back it went into limp mode on motorway. Stopped and restarted, out of limp mode but felt slightly ‘constrained’, not quite full power.

Took it to respected Indy. They couldn’t find much wrong, except for maybe slightly ragged turbo seal. Changed that, no difference. No codes or lights. Took their suggestion of nailing a whole bottle of Redex into 1/4 tank.

It worked, back to full power.

Now, another long run yesterday up to Bristol. Limp mode again, restarted and fine, except slight lack of power.

DPF? I’m all out of ideas.

Did they have proper mercedes diagnostics machine to read the codes?

I'd hazard a guess if the turbo seal was knackered it has broken the swirl flap motor by letting oil run down onto it.

Try unplugging it and see if the car still goes into limp mode.

You can use a resistor to fool the car that the motor is working. Pretty simple and wide known issue on these engines.

Not my first rodeo with these matters wink yes, full STAR

Swirl flap motor replaced a while back, turbo seal wasnt actually that bad but worth a punt.

Strangely enough it’s back to full power again!

I see that this week's shed of the week has a similar problem and some of the comments refer to it as well.

Haha yes I see!

I actually did the DPF pressure sensor a year ago, but that’s quite an easily diagnosable thing since there is a specific code. Massively satisfying to fix that for under £50 though.

Could be a pipe gummed up, although I tend to think it’s just because I only ever rag it between work and home now, 15 mins away…

Does it 'kangaroo' or jerk when it goes into limp mode? Or does any jerking precede the limp mode? Reason I ask is that it could be exhaust back pressure sensor or the turbo actuator.

Nope, on the motorway I didn’t even notice until the next time I went to accelerate!

I reckon it’s exhaust side rather than anything else. I have slightly adjusted my usage, I think my daily wringing of it’s neck for a short journey isn’t doing it any good!

Having just read https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... - perhaps it is something like the EGR has got gummed-up? May be when the engine is warm and it is sitting at a steady cruise on the motorway, the EGR is in a different position to when it is cold on a short blast to work?

When I see you for a curry next week, let me tell you a story about limp mode and the fun and games that EGR and swirl flap bits caused last year on one of those engines...
