I assume you've plugged the phone into the correct USB port, with the phone/tablet symbol?
Have you had a look through the multimedia menu on the car screen to see if android auto can be selected? I think you have to permission the car to allow the phone to connect via carplay/AA in a menu somewhere.
The bluetooth connection will only stream music/phone and allow limited control, it does not allow wireless phone mirroring.

The wife has a 2016 GLC and it came with idcore. I've plugged my phone in to the usb and Bluetooth is on and it says android auto on my phone but nothing on the Merc screen. What am I doing wrong?
2016 GLC doesn't have factory Android Auto - Mercedes didn't add it until 2017/2018. Your phone sees the connection but the car's system can't run it. You're not doing anything wrong.
Only way is to fit an aftermarket module (about £300) or use Mercedes' own apps via the "iPod" USB setting for basic music streaming. Bluetooth audio works fine for calls/music but no maps on screen.
