Filled up this morning, got back in, drove off and the computer beeped saying 'Limited range' - noticed that the fuel guage was still showing empty and the orange light was on. Stopped and started a couple of times but no better. Only had a 1/4 mile drive to work from the petrol station so not much chance to test it.

Is this a common problem? Could it be electrical or could the fuel sensor be stuck?

Hmmm, see if it resets itself overnight like our "ABS" warning light issue last week.

Not heard of your particular problem before though

UPDATE: Took the full 30 minute drive home last night for the needle to gradually creep up to full - seems to be working fine now!

i know that this is an old post but this happens to mine all the time. When you have say less than a 1/4 of a tank and you start the car, sometimes it will become full and work its way SLOWLY back down to the correct level, other times it will start off completely empty and with SLOWLY go up to the correct level. Complete pain in the ass.... I do know allot of other 156's that have had the same problem.

New fuel gauge sorts it but apparently they have to go in via the speedo housing which resets the odometer.

Touch wood, our 156 doesn't have this problem.

However, my 300ZX Twin Turbo has a similar problem. I fill it up and within 150 miles the needle is reading empty. Not funny when Optimax is now 100.9p litre
