Hi there - I recently inherited a 1982 Alfetta GTV6 from my late father. Its a car he has cherished for many years and I intend to cherish it for many more years! Its quite a high mileage example and the gearbox is crunching badly in 2nd gear. I know these transaxle gearboxes are a bit tricky at the best of times and I'm still getting used to the car but I think the gearbox is in need of a rebuild/recondition. I would add at this stage that I am not mechanically minded at all so will need professional help!

Is anyone able to recommend an Alfa specialist who would be able to help me with this based in the north of England (preferably Yorkshire)? I have acquired a lower mileage gearbox from a GTV (2.0 model) which I am hoping can be cannabilised for spares. Does anyone have a rough idea what a rebuild could be expected to cost...I literally have no idea!

Cheers

Nick

Speak to Charlie at Cloverleaf Transmissions. He's in Cumbria, 01946 817704.

Price will depend on what's wrong when he gets it open but he's honest and good so whatever he charges you won't be over the odds.

Another vote for Charlie.

You can send the thing to him on a pallet, if you don’t want to drop it off and collect it. He used to be based down here in NW London and he still has a loyal following that ships kit up to him to fettle it.

Worth asking him re the possibility of the LSD upgrade - alfa 75 gearboxes were the popular donor box for these but not many left - also suggest you replace gearbox mounts/bushes whilst you have the gearbox out. Also rear calipers seize up very quickly if car is not used regularly so again, check them over at same time.

Most of the GTV6 experts are down south - Wayne Ellett, Alex Jupe and Chris Snowdon. not sure about up north. may be worth joining alfa owners club (AROC or at least the facebook group - there are some excellent GTV/GTV6/75 facebook groups etc. Alex Jupe has worked on most of my cars. Nice cars but need a bit more maintenance than Alfa 105s due to transaxle layout as above.

The gearbox is behind you between the rear wheels. I’d be checking every inch of the linkage before thinking of a gearbox rebuild. Rule out the easy part first!

Good luck, great car!

Honestly, they all crunch on second. Just get used to double declutching.

I remember washing mine years ago at one of those petrol station jet wash things. Mrs rxe was in the car, and when done, I suggested she move it out of the way. She goes to start it, car lurches forward. She waggles the gearstick to check it is in neutral ... car lurches forward again. I open the passenger door and stick it in neutral - only then did she realise quite how much slack is in the linkage. I made mine a lot better by replacing the joint at the bottom of the gear stick - it is just an M6 bolt that is probably chewed up - stick a new one in and give it some support with some fat washers....
