I'm giving serious thought to replacing my Octavia vRS TFSi with an Alfa Romeo 159.
Thanks.
Curious why you're making the change? I'm an Alfa fan and think the 159 is a thing of beauty. Thanks.
I have a 2.4 jtdm manual and get around 35mpg or roughly 7L/100km, which for the performance is fine by me. I live rural and have a 30km traffic free run into town and then a few mins of town driving. It has heaps of power for overtaking and the fuel consumption seems to be pretty consistent even when pushing it a bit - there is so much low rev power that there is rarely any need to push the revs up. It really shines on the open road but is not that great arounf town TBH - rather heavy with slighty awkward gearing/clutch in 1st. A stunning, comfortable and much-underrated car IMHO. I would go for it if you are handy with the tools or have a good local indie garage and don't do too much town driving. Common but easily solved issues are covered in the alfaowner forum, but these are well built cars. Make sure you take any car for a good test drive.
Both of my sons have had a 159 Sportwagon 1.9 diesel (ie they've both had the same car - youngest son sold it to eldest son)
It's now closing in on 200,000 miles and is still going strong (and still on its original clutch!)
It munched its own gearbox a couple of years ago, but that was down to a lack of mechanical sympathy on eldest son's part, as well as ignoring the usual warning signs. Other than the usual (common) front wishbones and usual tyre wear, it has been excellent.
It has had an economy remap (due to not wanting to munch the gearbox with a performance map). It returns close to 50mpg in everyday driving, with high 50s on a long run.
Watch out for front subframe rust - another common issue.
'eye of the beholder' and all that, but I reckon they still look brilliant for a design that's now 18 years old

I have many fond memories of my 2009 Alfa 159 JTDM Lusso that I owned in 2012 for a year before being passed on to the wife. On business trips around the UK and family holidays to France and Italy I would get an average of around 43MPG.
It’s a real quality piece and the looks are stunning. Being critical it’s not the most dynamic of drives, although it had a reasonable turn of speed. I had one of the last 1.9’s and have heard the 2.0’s were a marked improvement. This picture was taken in Frejus in the South of France.
