As this engine is used in a wide range of cars, I wondered if its design was credited to one person or to a committee?

Can't seem to find any info from searching around.

The sheer quantity and number of applications for this engine is noteworthy....

I thought that, bar the 156 they had they and the 164 had the 8V T-Spark (i.e. proper T-Spark) engine which IMHO is the better engine compared to the 16V because a) it has a timing chain rather tan a belt and b) it uses both sparks to create power rather than one as a sort scavenging/cleaning/marketing ploy.

I don't think it could really be attributed to one individual as it has been constanty developed since its introduction in 1954 in the Giulietta Sprint. Even then it had much in common with previous alfa engines.

Stands back waiting to be shot down in flames by someone saying 'b*ll*x it was Guido Montechristo, the greatest engine designer of all time...'.

NO the new 16V Alfa lump is actually based on the Fiat Modular block and has nowt to do with the brilliant 8V engine which evolved in 1950s and became the Twin Spark in the late 70s. The first T spark production lump was in the 75.

I was talking about the 8V (sorry, should have made that clear).

The GTA was reasonably "production" with nearly 1000 1300 and 1600s back in the 1960s. These had twin spark heads too!

I don't think the current Fiat based Twin Spark can be attributed to any one person really. It's a cracking engine that's for sure, but the Alfa brochures from around the time of it's launch did not mention anyone by name.
