147 central locking issue

Hi all,
I've been lurking around for a while, and wonder if anyone else has had the same issues on their 147?
One day, the central locking just stopped working - it makes the right noises at first but then clicks repeatedly and the car remains unlocked, but the alarm and immobiliser are activated.
This happens no matter whether I use the remote, a key in one of the doors or the button from the inside.
The only way I can lock it is the old trick of locking it with the key and holding the door handle out for a couple of seconds, for each door individually, and then activating the alarm / immobiliser by the remote.
It's a pain in the bum, and I need to get it sorted to free up driveway space
