Hi all. Have noticed on a couple of occasions recently, clutch slip on the car (103,000 miles), its only for a moment when i've booted it and does not occur any other time. I have put the handbrake on and tried pulling away and putting into 6th at low speed and put my foot down with no slip. Does anybody know how long a clutch will last on one of these and how easy is a DIY change.

mate if your clutch has lasted 103,oo miles your doing well,it depends how heavy you are on the clutch.to replace it is not really a diy job.unless you have a ramp and the no how.

Not heavy on the clutch at all and dont ride it either, but i suppose 103k is not to bad. As for the replacement have plenty of tools and can get the car high enough and have done a few before on other cars. Just wondering if there were any difficult areas to watch out for or any specific Alfa tools required.

Go to www.alfa156.net and visit the forum there. Will be plenty of advice on there, I know at least one person who has done clutches himself - its a fairly major job.

Numbnuts and I changed the clutch on his V6 156. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it was one of the most 'orrible jobs both he and I have ever done, he's a skilled mechanic of millions of years too.

It took us probably about 6 or more hours, nothing was straightforward, nothing came out as it should, we had it up on a 4 poster, engine supported from underneath, pushed up onto one engine mount eek a real bstard of a procedure. I think even an alfa dealer gives about 6 hours for labour. We were tempted to take the engine out at one point...

If you are a man of patience then go for it, otherwise save some pennies and get someone else to do it. .

boxedin Sorry, not meaning to be a killjoy. grumpy

I'm sure you won't be thought of as a killjoy Mike!

There are a few jobs I've done on my cars where I wish someone had told me to take it to a garage before I'd started them!

Well now up to 104k miles and it seems, after all the stick i've been giving it that it will not slip any more. So i think i shall wait a while longer.
But in the meantime the top engine steady mount (engine offside rear) has let go and it seems that spares are on back order but at the moment none are available in the UK.

Are you anywhere near Huddersfield? I got Alfatec to do mine labour only and they charged £210 plus vat. Ive tried a few places and this was the cheapest one at the time, they did a top job too. Mine went at 93k miles, and it just went at once, one minute fine next minute slipping in all gears. Lasted a couple of weeks in that state though luckly.

No down in Essex for my sins. Spoke to main dealer re clutch and its £139 +vat. On www.shop4parts.co.uk its listed as £134+vat.
Dealer also said that GTA clutch is the same part as the V6, 2.5, which means that some of the posts on other sites about them being different and the GTA being stronger is utter twaddle.
In the meantime lets just wait and see.

Well quote from Alfa Workshop £550 all in so they have the job. Booked in for the 11th oct (first available slot) and guess what?, this morning just on the way to work it went pop> Still have drive but now change is right at the top of the pedal and it rattles a bit. So no more driving until new one is in. All in all not to bad for 105,000 miles.

Comdiver - it wouldn't be the first time and Alfa dealer was talking sh1te. GTA clutch will fit a 2.5 (have fitted one in mine) but is made of different material and will last longer (and is actually cheaper than the 2.5 clutch)

Well all i can tell you is what i have been told and thats the part numbers for the 2.5 and 3.2 are identical so draw from that your own conclusions, however i am not disputing your findings on the matter. But if the next one lasts as long then i will be happy enough.
