We all have model cars, right? Probably more than we’d readily admit to in public. Small ones, large ones, old ones, new ones. They might be cars that remind us of our past, things we aspire to own for real in the future, or ones that hold particular sentimental value. From Hot Wheels to Ottomobile, collecting model cars is a lovely little aside to the main obsession.
And then there’s the Amalgam Collection. It doesn’t so much reproduce automotive icons as make four-wheeled art; a few PH threads are running on its work, and sometimes the historic race events will feature an Amalgam stand. It’s incredibly easy to spend hours just gawping, the scale model cars seemingly better assembled than the real thing. So it’s probably appropriate that an Amalgam model costs as much as a car with an engine.
This is its latest creation, a Countach LP400; an officially licensed product, Amalgam has had a relationship with Sant’Agata for 15 years, and now it’s time for perhaps its most iconic model. More than 400 hours of work (and 4,000 hours of development) goes into making each of the 1:8-scale models, with thousands of parts involved. There are switches to open the doors and take a look at that beautifully recreated interior, for example. The Amalgam LP400 is over 50cm long and will be offered in either Giallo or Rosso; there won’t be a desk in the land that isn't improved by its presence. Or a mantelpiece, for matter. Or indeed a whole house, it looks that good.
There will be just 199 of these LP400s made; a tiny amount, though actually more than the 151 examples produced of the real thing. The price is £14,835, which is obviously huge for a model - but cheap for a Lamborghini though, right? A V12 LP400 will cost £1.5m, after all…
Amalgam has also brought its Lamborghini portfolio right up to the present day with its latest announcement, confirming the development of a Revuelto model. Though only renders are available for the moment, expect the same level of mind-blowing detail; another 1:8 scale model (meaning just over 56cm), it is offered in the orange from the original launch for £12,185. Or, for customers of the real thing, in the exact spec of their 1,001hp Revuelto, which might be pretty hard to resist. Part of the tie-up with Lamborghini means Amalgam has access to all of the colours and trims, to ensure that it's exact to the very last detail. Those bespoke commissions cost £17,425, and one can be secured with a 50 per cent deposit. The Countach is on sale now, so best be quick.
Sandy Copeman, Founder of Amalgam Collection, commented: “It’s a pleasure to unveil the Revuelto, the latest Lamborghini addition to the Amalgam Collection. The Countach LP400 and the Revuelto are both extremely special cars, demonstrating the very best of Lamborghini’s spectacular design and equally extraordinary engineering. At Amalgam, we take great pride in our commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail and are delighted to continue our longstanding partnership with Automobili Lamborghini to bring these iconic vehicles to life as perfect large-scale models. Whether you’re a collector or a Lamborghini enthusiast, our models offer a unique opportunity to own a piece of automotive history.”
