It's a curious World Record, but one Caterham Cars are proud to have won
again. It's the World Reverse Speed Record. With the help of Pulling Power
presenter and Formula 1 test driver, Darren Manning they've snatched it back
with Darren reversing at 102.52 mph, nearly 20 mph faster than the existing
record.
After the attempt Darren commented "The Caterham, with its proven
chassis makes it one of the best-handling sports cars on the road, but that's
going forward. In reverse, its a different story."
With the steering now effectively at the back of the vehicle, any slight
deviation could cause it to spin.
"It was really much harder than I thought. Even at speeds of 45 mph,
the slightest movement of the steering wheel had the car weaving like mad. And
as soon as I touched the brakes it wanted to spin."
The event was verified by the Guinness Book of Records and the attempt will
be televised in the first of a new series of "Pulling Power" to be
screened on Carlton's London and Central regions on Monday 28th January at 10:50
pm.
