Back in December we ran an online design clinic for some design students from
Huddersfield University. Here is the result of their work after plenty of
feedback from PH members.
Based on the Westfield Megabusa SEW chassis the 'Toniq-R' team as they call
themselves have built a new body aimed at bringing Chapman's original 7 style
body up to date. Changes have been limited to the bodywork, leaving the chassis
and running gear as designed by Westfield.
Westfield were involved in the project initially although after some
differences of opinion regarding the design the team proceeded alone to pursue
the style we see here.
The four designers have interesting backgrounds with Angus Fitton having
worked on Top Gear and Autocar as a journalist and Colin Williams having worked
at TVR in their design department. Paul Philpot and Will Baxter complete the
team.
Much support was solicited from within the motor industry. Sponsors included
the RAC (transportation of the prototype around country for painting and shows)
and Aspley Autoparts (wheels, tyres & all accessories). Jaguar cars UK
machined many detail parts and HMG paints of Manchester applied the titanium and
electric blue paintwork. Denaco supplied a hard resin which enabled them to
create the solid body which feels like fibreglass but is infact blue foam and
polyfiller! The remainder of the components were made in house.
It's certainly got the 21st Century look although, no doubt PH readers will
give us their full and frank opinions... :)
