However tempting the prospect, there’s always an element of risk associated with taking on someone else’s project car. Oh sure, they may have done the bulk of the work, and you might be able to save a chunk of cash, but there are always the unknowns. On the face of it, this Camaro appears to be another intriguing project car. After all, who wouldn’t be keen on the idea of a huge V8 in a classic muscle car, with a host of parts to make it stop and steer as well as it goes? It’s very easy to imagine heart ruling head and taking the plunge on what must be a properly thrilling track car. Who wants to take an old Porsche on circuit when there’s this available?
And this is far more than the average road racer build, too, which only adds to the appeal. See this Camaro, to be auctioned on PH from Sunday, was commissioned by EBC Brakes to celebrate its 40th anniversary last year. The transformation was undertaken by Carcass TV, and more than four hours of it is documented on the Powernation YouTube channel. There you’ll find a full list of parts used, too, with every upgrade documented. It can’t be often that so many details and so much information have been on offer for a project car, and that has to be good for the confidence of the next owner.
EBC really went the whole hog on this Camaro, too - it wasn’t simply a case of the livery and a better set of pads. The shell was stripped, repaired, strengthened and resprayed, with some new composite parts including the bootlid and arches. The interior features a full custom cage, a quick-release wheel, harness, racing seat and electronic dash. Plus, well, look at it - when they say this has barely been used since completion, the condition totally corroborates that claim. It’s basically brand new in there.
Given the origins of this build, the Camaro’s stoppers are top-notch, with EBC’s big brake kit, hoses and bespoke lines; suspension has been significantly upgraded as well, and it runs on a set of slicks with a rude amount of negative camber up front. Anyone who’s seen Camaros thunder around Goodwood will find an awful lot to like here.
This is most certainly going to do its fair share of thundering, too, thanks to a giant V8 under the hood. It’s a 440ci (7.2-litre) small block, now mounted much further back in the chassis and dry-sumped for optimal weight distribution; the sound is phenomenal, and the power outrageous: 640hp at its most recent dyno run. Even though that needed 112-octane fuel to achieve, this is clearly a massively potent Camaro; there won’t be much getting away from it on any track.
There’s nothing that’s been left untouched in the pursuit of ultimate track performance, and clearly a huge amount of money invested in the Camaro build: see the carbon propshaft, fire suppression system and gearbox from a NASCAR for proof. It really wants for nothing but driving, and driving hard - assuming it passes the noise test at your local track, of course.
