You may well have seen a bit of the gorgeous Genesis G90 Wingback Concept already, as it was on static display when the GV60 Magma was shown to the world. And, well, it’s easier to imagine people fawning over this stunner than the orange one they were meant to be looking at. Following what must have been a fairly enthusiastic response a couple of weeks ago, Genesis has now shared some more information and images of yet another one of its breathtaking concepts. That’s not hyperbole, either: think of the Vision Gran Turismo car, the X Convertible, and the X Speedium Coupe - wonderful, all three of them. Surely they have to make one soon enough…
For now, Genesis suggests that this Wingback is ‘more than a showpiece’, which is encouraging, adding that it represents an ‘embodiment of a decade’s worth of innovation, accelerating the next chapter of Genesis’ journey.’ Certainly something like this feels like it would make a more viable Magma production car (they don’t all have to be orange!) than some of the more adventurous recent concepts, not least as the Wingback is built on existing G90 architecture. Plus there’s a new RS6 coming. And the M5 Touring is already out there. It’s easy to make the case.
Moreover, the Wingback looks great using familiar Genesis cues. This isn’t a radical departure for the brand; it’s a logical extension, all the way to 5.1m long and with a 3.2m wheelbase. It has the Genesis lights, the Genesis grille, the Genesis Parabolic Line, albeit on the sexiest shooting brake-style estate you ever did see. The arches are broad without being cartoonish, the double spoiler arrangement is smarter than you might have imagined, the carbon is applied tactfully… it’s a fabulous-looking thing. Genesis suggests it has ‘an aggressive stance while maintaining an aristocratic demeanour.’ Couldn’t have put it better ourselves. But perhaps most crucially the Wingback looks real, all the way down to slightly weird exhausts, proper wing mirrors and an aerial. There’s even what looks like a perfectly normal interior, complete with the same sort of suede as found in the GV60 and green contrast stitching where that car used orange. Maybe this concept sits a bit low on its 22s, but otherwise it looks all set for the slopes.
Genesis has some form with estates too, of course, having offered the G70 as a Shooting Brake not long ago. It wasn’t tremendously good, but it looked smart, its maker clearly keen to try different things. As Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke puts it: “At the moment there is, let’s say, a multiplication of SUVs. And this fast growth will create a saturation. This is when other typologies of cars are going to become attractive again. This is why I strongly believe in not having a typology monoculture.”
While the G90 saloon isn’t offered in the UK, in the markets that it is there’s a 415hp turbo V6 option. Not really potent enough to go up against the 700hp+ hybrids, though better than might be expected. Given the four-door isn’t available with an electric powertrain, unlike a lot of the Genesis range, any Wingback-style car that did make it to the showroom would probably use an internal combustion engine. Wouldn’t want to have four exhausts just for show, after all.
The G90 concept has been pitched by Genesis as a ‘bridge between Magma and the One of One bespoke program’, so any version made is going to be super exclusive. But the very fact that these things are being said would suggest that Genesis is thinking about making a few. They could name their price, surely, especially in the green. Donckerwolke concluded: “Magma does not shout; it invites. Where most chase aggression and extremes, we seek balance. Magma is designed to be rewarding, not challenging; to complement the driver, not to intimidate them.” Interesting. Let’s hope to hear more about the Wingback Concept in 2026.
