We’ve surely all dressed our cars up to look like something they aren’t from time to time. Whether that’s through a set of wheels and a bodykit, or perhaps downbadging something potent to make it seem less so, it’s fairly common practice. Take it from someone who had to sheepishly tell people his Mini that looked like a JCW was just a Cooper S. Sometimes you like the look but can’t afford the extra, and that’s fine. These days it’s more seldom seen, perhaps with all cars that bit more aggressive in their standard form.
So kudos to Cupra, then, for launching what it’s calling the Custom Cupra by Abt packs, a set of upgrades for all Leons and Formentors to spice them up visually. There’s a nice motorsport link (Abt running the Formula E cars, and the packs built at the Cupra Racing Factory), plus the reminder that Cupra does still make a conventional petrol hot hatch as well as a fast estate equivalent. It isn’t just different spins on the MEB toolkit. The Custom Cupra by Abt pack has been presented at this year’s running of the Cupra Performance Days at the Red Bull Ring.
For the Cupra Leon and Leon ST, the pack is meant to bring the flagship VZ to mind, with new 19-inch wheels, a rear spoiler more befitting of a hot hatch than the standard effort, side skirts, splitters, a diffuser and even winglets behind the rear wheels. Perhaps a tad extreme for a 150hp Leon, but in what seems like a very worthy car world right now we’re all for a bit of fun. On a 300hp petrol car, bringing a bit of VZ attitude at significantly less money, it makes more sense. And you wouldn’t be alone in thinking that the estate looks quite smart, too.
The treatment is broadly similar for the Formentor SUV, if actually a tad more extreme - check out that rear spoiler. Cupra says the Abt pack ‘echoes the rebellious spirit of the flagship VZ5, bringing its unmistakable, high-performance look to the full model range’. So that means the splitters and spoilers aplenty once more, a feast of black accents, and a new alloy wheel design. It’s even possible to Abtify a five-cylinder Formentor, with dark chrome logos, 20-inch wheels and big rear spoiler, but without the diffuser because of the exhausts.
Sven Schuwirth, Cupra’s Exec VP for Sales and Marketing, said: “The Custom Cupra by ABT pack marks the newest page of our collaboration and brings the character of our most extreme models to every customer, regardless of which powertrain they choose. It is about giving drivers the freedom to make their Cupra truly their own, with the meticulous craftsmanship of the Cupra Racing Factory behind every single component.” All the packs are going to be available from next month, either as a factory fit option with a new order or to be retrofitted to an existing car. Which might be a nice way to jazz up a Cupra that’s now a couple of years old (price notwithstanding, of course - they’re TBC for now). This 333hp, 75-plate Leon wagon has basically £15k off its list price, and the Abt pack surely won’t be that much…
