Honda confirms Prelude Limited Edition for Europe

Championship White? Type R powertrain? Not exactly...

Probably we should be grateful that the Honda Prelude exists at all. Even at £40k, numbers are sufficiently small that it’ll never make much of a dent on its maker's balance sheet. On top of launching at a time when there aren’t really any coupes to compare it to. Nevertheless, the Prelude is also showing off hybrid tech in a much more interesting fashion than many others, proof that Honda is about more than just dreary crossovers and the Jazz. It’d be nice if more manufacturers would follow its lead, in fact. Rather than demonstrating how great their electrified petrol engine is in a massive SUV.

For 2027, as has been coupe lore for generations, there’s a Prelude Limited Edition for Europe following a ‘successful debut’ in Japan. It does nothing for the Prelude’s modest performance, though it does offer a ‘unique, elevated aesthetic that highlights the sleek proportions and sophisticated Japanese craftsmanship.’ Nobody else may want to make two doors with petrol engines, but Honda is going all in - it’s like a Gran Turismo prize car for real life.

The paint is now Premium Crystal Garnet Metallic, there to ‘accentuate the car’s fluid contours’, with red accents, red Brembo calipers (they’re usually blue), and some smart 19-inch wheels. The Prelude is already quite an attention-grabbing model and the Limited Edition perhaps even more so, bringing to mind just a little bit the Mazda MX-5 Merlot of 30 years ago. Most importantly for prospective customers who’ll have to pay the special edition premium, there’s no mistaking it for a regular Prelude.

Same goes inside, with Bordeaux leather, red contrast stitching, dedicated floor mats - wouldn’t be a special edition without those - and the Prelude logo embroidered onto the dash. That’ll be something to show the guys at padel. Honda says the SE interior ‘elevates an already immersive cockpit that balances sporty ambition with luxury refinement.’

“The characteristics of the Prelude have changed over the years, but what has remained the same is its sportiness and specialty. When you think of a sports car, you think of something sharp, like an F1 or a fighter jet. However, I think the theme of this model is closer to the image of a glider that glides through the air with a sense of freedom,” said Tomoyuki Yamagami, Large Project Leader for the Honda Prelude. It’s a very Honda kind of coupe, for better and for worse, the Prelude. For now, this edition is the ultimate expression of the latest version, though we live in hope that a car that shares so much with the Civic can get a Type R in the fullness of time. Hopefully the Super-N can boost Honda’s EV sales and make it viable…

The Prelude Limited Edition is for the 2027 Model Year, launching in Europe this autumn. You’ll notice there’s nothing mentioned there about availability here, although the car is featured on the UK media site - and we do love a special edition. If a yellow Civic without a stereo can be sold here, surely a few Premium Crystal Garnet Metallic Preludes can as well - we’ll keep you posted.
