Big vans are big business for VW, be that for commercial use or as the staycation bus of your dreams. That fully decked out Californias can cost up to £85,000 and regular Transporters £70k is proof of that. Plenty of them about, too. So while it’s easy to think of VW in terms of Polos, Golfs and Tiguans, the commercial stuff is crucial as well - and never more so than with the introduction of the all-electric ID Buzz.
You’ll probably know plenty about the ID Buzz and ID Buzz Cargo already, so now it’s time for really important numbers: prices. In the UK the Buzz range - all initially powered by a 77kWh battery offering 204hp, 228lb ft and 258 miles - will start at £57,115 for the Life. As with cars like the ID.3 and ID.4 (with which the Buzz shares its MEB architecture), Life is the entry-level model, though here that still means wireless charging, Discover Pro nav, loads of USB ports, a heated windscreen, LED lights and the Buzz box removable storage. Those thinking it looks a lot of money might like to note the current California Beach Camper range kicks off at £60,050 with a 150hp diesel Beach Camper. Living your best VW lifestyle doesn’t come cheap.
One up from a Life is the £61,915 Style, which adds LED Matrix lights, tailgate surround lighting and ‘adaptive interior ambient lighting’, which passengers will surely love. The standard 19-inch wheels are replaced with 20s, too. The most expensive ID Buzz from launch will be the 1st Edition, which adds Discover Max navigation (with a 12-inch screen replacing the 10-inch one), comfort seats and 21-inch wheels - it costs £62,995. Don’t forget the options, either; the two-tone paint the ID Buzz has been shown in so frequently is £1,800.
Still, it does remain a cool-looking van, and time spent on the configurator will do nothing to harm its appeal to the VW faithful. Does look a tad underwheeled on the 19s, though. Orders for the ID Buzz are being taken now; those with offcuts rather than offspring to cart around might like to know that the all-electric ID Buzz Cargo goes on sale next month.
