Can you tell what it is yet?
It’s not exactly the most revealing image, but this is the first official picture of the new Audi A5 Sportback.
The Sportback, which goes on sale in the UK this autumn, will become the third A5 model, sitting alongside the A5 Coupe and Cabrio.
The A5 Sportback’s shape stretches the definition of the word coupe even further than the Mercedes CLS and VW Passat CC. The pic clearly shows the new car’s rear hatch, making the Audi Sportback a five-door coupe. Considering the shape and compliment of doors, if you’re being generous you could call it a junior Porsche Panamera (Steady on Riggers! Ed), although the Sportback’s A4 base makes it more like Audi’s take on the Passat CC.
Audi says that, despite the frameless doors, shallow side glass area and tapering roofline (which is 36mm lower than the A4 saloon’s), interior passenger space, including rear headroom and legroom, is comparable with the saloon’s.
Power comes from the usual range of A4 diesel and petrol motors, the tastiest of which are the 208bhp 2.0 TFSI and the 261bhp 3.2-litre V6.
The A5 Sportback could even spawn a hot RS5 version, which would use an updated, cleaner version of the old RS4’s 4.2-litre V8. It could also use the twin-clutch S Tronic gearbox - a first for an RS Audi.
