Claims
by Audi that its unique new continuously variable transmission (CVT) can
maintain performance, fuel economy and emissions at the same level as a manual
equivalent have been substantiated by The Automobile Association.
AA experts compiled a detailed road test dossier on the A6 2.4 SE multitronic,
and summed up their thoughts on the new transmission by writing: "No
manual gearbox or ace-driver can beat it and it’s the first automatic we’ve
tested that costs no more to fuel."
Test equipment confirmed that the multitronic-equipped A6 can outperform not
just its manual counterpart, but the majority of comparable automatic class
rivals, while at the same time consuming significantly less fuel.
The Audi A6 2.4 with multitronic transmission can accelerate to 62mph in 9.4
seconds (in a mild contradiction the factory figure for five-speed manual
version is 9.3 seconds), reach a 137mph maximum speed (factory figure for
five-speed manual version 139mph) and return 29.1mpg on the combined cycle
(factory figure for five-speed manual version 28.3mpg). It also emits less
carbon dioxide than its manual counterpart at 230g/km (factory figure for
five-speed manual version 238 g/km).
Multitronic transmission is available now as an option costing £1,450 for
most front-wheel-drive models in the A4 and A6 saloon and Avant ranges, with the
remainder following in the near future.
