BMW has released official details of the controversial new M Sport versions of the X6 and X5.
Both cars use a new 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, which produces 547bhp and maximum torque to 501lb ft. Both will be capable of a top speed of 171mph with the optional M driver’s pack, but will be limited to 155mph otherwise. 62mph will be dispatched within 4.7 seconds.
BMW’s M Division claim the new X6 M and X5 M will benefit from smoother power delivery thanks to a new layout, where the catalytic converter and twin turbochargers are positioned between the V-shape aligned cylinders. This produces a more linear delivery of maximum torque between 1,500 – 5,650 rpm.
As with other M Sport cars, the driver can configure their own DSC and EDC set-ups through the new iDrive system, as well as activate launch control. Both models come with the M Sports Automatic paddle-shift six-speed transmission.
There’s even a new efficiency mode, that features regenerative braking, and an air-conditioning system that can detach itself from the drive belt to help decrease fuel consumption. Fuel consumption is, however, still alarmingly low at a claimed 20.3mpg.
The new M Sport cars will stand out from the regular crop of school run SUVs thanks to larger air intakes in the front bumper, quad exhausts and vents on the front wings.
Prices will be revealed later in the year, before both vehicles go on sale in October.
