Renault ING F1 boss Flavio Briatore and engineering chief Pat Symonds have quit the team. In a statement made this morning, the team also confirmed that they will not dispute the allegations made by Nelson Piquet Jnr during next Monday's hearing at the World Motor Sport Council.
Piquet claims that Briatore and Symonds ordered him to crash on the 14th lap of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, in order to engineer a pace car period that would help his teammate Fernando Alonso to go on to win the race. Piquet followed orders and their plan worked, but as relations crumbled between him and the team and shortly before losing his drive for next season, Piquet reported the incident to the FIA, who immediately launched an investigation into the matter.
As more allegations, rumours and legal threats continue to engulf the Renault F1 team, today's news adds yet more fuel to what is turning into a real inferno, and many fear for the future of the troubled team.
