Not muscular enough? Wait for the Z28...
Despite reports in the US motoring press back in March that the proposed range-topping Z28 version of the new Chevrolet Camaro was to be canned, GM hinted last weekend that the muscle car is back on the cards.
Although the estimated $50 million development cost has allegedly made the Z28 project prohibitively expensive, GM officials speaking at last weekend’s Carlisle All-GM National show in Pennsylvania suggested that the Z28 will come to fruition.
The car, which is likely to come to market sometime in 2011, will get a unique grille, a more muscular bonnet and possibly a rear spoiler. Power will come from an uprated version of an as-yet-unspecified version of GM’s evergreen LS-series V8.
The future of the Camaro convertible also seems to be more secure, after the GM team at the event said that the Z28 would follow the launch of a convertible version of the standard Camaro in spring 2011.
The two cars are still not officially confirmed for production, but the future is at least looking far brighter for muscle car fans than it did a few short months ago.
