Apart from their shared nationality, Koenigsegg and Volvo share very little in common, but engineer Mattias Vöcks is looking to combine the two in a modern interpretation of one of Volvo’s first ever sports cars, the P1800.
The Koenigsegg engineer and veteran of numerous tuning companies will look to use his performance car knowledge to squeeze a 4.4-litre Volvo V8, taken from the XC90, into a modified version of the classic Volvo’s body.
The front end of the P1800 will be extended by 70mm to accommodate the new turbocharged engine, that Vöcks expects to tune up to 600bhp. A six-speed manual gearbox will replace the original car’s all-synchromesh Laycock overdrive sending that power to the rear wheels. The modern P1800 will get a flat underside to aid aerodynamics, a rear diffuser and a lightly restyled front end to provide breathing for the new unit.
Vöcks has teamed up with Swedish design company Vizualtech to create a collection of renderings of his take on the P1800, but despite the car being under construction it will likely be several months before Vöcks's Volvo makes its first public appearance.
This latest design comes after Vöcks’s previous effort three years ago, when he created a custom version of a 1967 Volvo Amazon given to him by his grandmother, though this was never intended for volume production.
