There's a new GT car on the block. US-based DDR Motorsport is in the process of developing a new, affordable fibreglass-bodied machine it describes as "GT-inspired, much like the Porsche GT1, Jaguar XJ220, Ford GT90 prototype, Bugatti EB110, Porsche 962, the Mazda 787B Le Mans car."
Based on the Toyota MR2 Mk2 drivetrain, the plan is for it to include Toyota's 2.0-litre turbocharged powerplant rated at 230bhp, which the company says that, "when modified will allow for over 400hp very easily, with aftermarket engine management and turbo kit. The chassis will be a full tubular chassis with the custom body on top, and will have to be tested and retested for best performance and craftsmanship guarantee."
However, the project is not a kit car any more. The company says, "right now our goal is to sell a completely built car, one that you can also modify freely. We are also evaluating the possibility of selling the car as a ‘do-it-yourself’ build-up, but this will be announced at a later time."
The target price is said to be around $30-40,000 (about £16,000-20,000) depending on options. These include "different engine packages, for example, installing the 1MZ 3.0L V6 engine found in late model Camrys, Solaras and Lexus, to give even more power potential, as well as the possibility of having a V8 engine." Although there's no timescale for completion of the project on the company's Web site, it has increased its Web presence recently which suggests that it's moving towards fruition.
The minds behind the venture are designers Diego Grullón and Juan Ovalle who, in October 2001 "decided to create a kit car that was superior to the ones they had known until then, with a GT look and design, which is the basis for this ambitious project, the DDR, as it is being called, is being constructed using criteria and materials of the highest quality, making it today a reality."
