Truckers have long protested high prices
Hundreds of lorry drivers are descending on London today angry at spiralling fuel costs.
Motorists have been told to expect serious delays as protest convoys travel into the capital and along the M4 in Wales.
Truckers say their livelihoods are being destroyed and they simply cannot afford to pay the record prices at the pumps.
Diesel prices have hit 120p a litre and the Government is planning a further 2p fuel tax rise.
Hauliers are now calling for an ‘essential user’ duty rebate to reduce costs.
Witnesses said the protesters had gained the support of people along the way and many motorists were beeping their horns as a sign of solidarity.
The eastbound A40 was due to be closed between the northern roundabout and Paddington from 10am to 4.30pm as truckers leave their vehicles and head to Downing Street to hand the petition to the Government.
There was also expected to be a 60-mile convoy protest in Wales from Cross Hands, Llanelli.
The police even reportedly handed out some public order notices to drivers telling them that they couldn’t drive below 40mph in certain conditions.
Mike Presneill of protest group Transaction 2007 said: ‘Fuel is rocketing. The Government has the power to act but appears not to be listening. Hundreds of UK transport firms are being driven to the wall.’
