The Boss ready for some track action
A couple of lust-inducing new Mustang variants have been wheeled out by Ford at the Performance Racing Industry Show in Orlando Florida - the race/trackday-ready ready BOSS 302S and a new for 2012 Cobra Jet drag car.
Ford Racing reckons the Mustang BOSS 302S offers an affordable way into road racing and at $79k the suggestion doesn't seem too outlandish to us.
The 440hp racer is based on the street-legal 2012 Mustang BOSS 302, they say, which means you get a 5.0-litre 4-valve Ti-VCT V8, a 6-speed transmission and a T2 Torsen differential. The suspension features two-way adjustable coil-over dampers and Ford Racing anti-roll front and rear.
The BOSS 302S uni-body starts as a Mustang body-in-white, and to reduce weight the factory seam sealer, sound deadener and interior panels are deleted prior to build. In addition to body reinforcement, a 6 point FIA legal roll cage is installed and there's a Recaro lightweight race seat, 6-point safety belt, quick release steering wheel and AIM data acquisition system with GPS.
Aerodynamic updates include that fantastic (looking) heat extracting fibre-glass bonnet, adjustable front splitter and adjustable carbon fibre rear wing. Retro BOSS 302 graphics mimic the original 1969 BOSS 302 programme, we're told.
The 2012 Cobra Jet dragster
The 2012 Cobra Jet Mustang will be limited to just fifty 50 'turn-key' examples, and for the first time since the dragster's (re)introduction in 2008 will be available in three colours - Race Red, Grabber Blue and Winner White.
The 2012 CJ will come with all of the features of the 2010 car including a full race-prepared automatic transmission, drag race-specific shocks and springs, manual steering and brakes, certified rollcage, and an aeromotive return-style fuel system with boot-mounted fuel cell, says Ford.
For 2012, the Cobra Jet features a 5.4L supercharged engine based on the 2011 SVT Mustang with two supercharger options, a 2.3-litre TVS unit or a 4.0-litre Ford Racing Whipple supercharger. Black anodized Cobra Jet wheels from Weld Racing and a new compound tire with unique Cobra Jet branding from Goodyear complete the picture, which could be yours for the none-too-princely sum of $103,980.
