The Mammals Trust UK has just launched its seventh annual roadkill survey to provide statistical data on the countryside’s wildlife. In the previous 5 years the roadkill top trumps has found that we motorists are more likely to flatten a rabbit than a hedgehog, with foxes and badgers more likely to meet an untimely death than a grey squirrel.
Though a morbid exercise, counting the mammals squashed on the roads, helps keep track of UK wildlife trends. This method has proved more efficient than the traditional methods of counting animal tracks or droppings, as David Wembridge - from the trust - points out “Roadkill is a good way to count numbers. They are very much more visible than live animals”
