After his 288mph rocket-car crash last year, Richard Hammond had a much smaller shunt on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit over the weekend. Team Top Gear, that is the presenters and the Stig had entered the 24hr race in a £100,000 BMW 330 Dti Sport.
Their car, no. 78, qualified 56th out of 59, with some large discrepancies in the lap times of the different drivers. In the race, things improved and the team began to climb through the field, making it up to 38th at one point. However, during the night stage of the race, their car collided with another faster car, and Hammond left the circuit.
After being towed back to the pits, the car was repaired and it restarted. Richard Hammond was unhurt. He denied rumours that he enjoyed a comforting hug from Clarkson, saying, 'I would rather be hugged by a threshing machine.' They finished the race in 39th position, out of 46 finishers. In their class, a VW Golf diesel finished 13th overall, and a BMW 120 diesel finished 14th.
