You’d have thought that given the summer we’ve just experienced in the UK, that no-one in their right mind would be interested in a flyweight drop-top with distinctly dated styling.
However, Caterham has bucked this trend completely by posting sales results up 25% on last year’s figures.
It would seem that jettisoning the ageing Rover-based K-series engines and adopting the Ford Sigma unit is mostly responsible for driving up sales as loyal customers buy cars with the new power plant.
If you ever needed evidence to convince the other half that investing in a Sunday toy was worthwhile, Caterham is keen to point out that the oldest pre-enjoyed Seven in stock is a 128bhp Roadsport 1.4 built in 1993, which still boasts a price tag of £12,000.
Since taking over the rights to build the car from Colin Chapman in 1973, Caterham has sold 12,000 of the diminutive two seaters.
That means there should be plenty of choice for a new trackday weapon or B-road blaster, provided you can find space in the garage.
