Peugeot has had its eye off the ball when it comes to hot hatches for quite some time now.
For this reason we are not getting overly excited about the new petrol 308 range topper, the GT THP 175.
It uses the same 1.6 turbo that is found in the 207 GTi (and Mini Cooper) and, as the name suggests, develops 175bhp at 6000rpm.
The car gets a six-speed manual ‘box and is distinguished by a lower front bumper panel, rear spoiler, and lowered suspension.
Peugeot says the emphasis is on torque, with the 1.6 developing 180 lb ft (or 195 lb ft with overboost) at 1600 rpm, making the car feel like it has a larger capacity engine.
Combined fuel consumption is 37.1 mpg and there are CO2 emissions of 180 g/km, 10% less than those of the previous generation 307 2.0 litre Feline 180.
The car will do 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds and has a top speed of 140mph.
The 308 GT THP 175 will go on sale in the UK in April and more information concerning specification and prices will be announced nearer the launch date.
