A 1964 Mini Cooper 1275 S rally car sold for £100,500 at Race Retro last weekend, believed to be a world record figure for a Mini. 'DJB 93B' won the 1965 RAC rally outright with Rauno Aaltonen behind the wheel, and also won the Scottish rally the following year.
After its competition career, the car lay dormant for 30 years before being restored a decade ago. Since then it's been a regular at historic events but still has only 4,825 miles on the clock. The sale price is twice that of the pre-sale estimate.
It was an interesting weekend for auction activity, with the ex-works Mk I Escort RS1600 rally car 'XPU 216L - as graced by Roger Clark, Tony Pond and Russel Brookes - sold for £70,800. Down under, a Ford Falcon GTHO phase 3 was bought by a Sydney enthusiast for around £280,000. The type was used by Allan Moffat to win at Bathurst in 1971.
