Hot on the heels of the high-profile launch of Jaguar's new XJ luxury car, news emerged yesterday that plans are afoot for a possible coupe version.
Sky Motoring interviewed the XJ’s chief designer Ian Callum, who reportedly confirmed that artwork for a two-door variant of the svelte machine already exists – although as yet nobody has dared to suggest the project will make it into the metal.
But the prospect of a replacement for the classic XJ-C definitely gets our juices flowing here at PH, not least as it means we get a chance to run blurry old pics of the glorious V12 racers campaigned by Broadspeed in the mid-1970s. Reliability problems plagued them on the track, but they were blindingly quick when they were working. And didn’t they look fab with those wide arches and stripped-out body-shells?
The standard road cars looked pretty fab too, although with British Leyland quality built in, the heavily reworked saloons reputedly suffered from plenty of water leaks and reliability problems of their own.
Still, with ‘new Jaguar’ earning the plaudits of the JD Power crowd, and the marque’s new design language winning plenty of praise too, we’d love to see Mr Callum’s vision for a new XJ Coupe. So fingers crossed that one day soon we will!
