If anyone could be said to have lived their dream, it’s Kenny B. Even those of us lucky enough to make a fortune at a relatively young age (he co-founded DC Shoes when he was 27, selling his shares to Quiksilver in 2004) don’t always see life pan out in the way we would like. But thanks to a natty talent for going sideways (and a much bigger talent for online content and marketing) Mr Block got to spend his time doing the things he loved. And anyone who enters international rallying for the thrill of it (or makes feature-length Gymkhana videos to pay for it) is always going to qualify as a hero in the big PH book of such things.
In the wake of his untimely death, his family have endeavoured to continue his legacy with the creation of 43 Institute, an organisation that aims to create ‘paths of opportunity in motorsports, action sports and creative arts for the next generation of aspiring talent, regardless of their financial means.’ Obviously, this is the sort of charitable effort that requires money, so the Block family has partnered with eBay Motors to create “From the Collection: Ken Block,” a public auction of 43 items of ‘one-of-a-kind’ memorabilia.
“Ken Block was an undeniable inspiration to car lovers and fans everywhere - he united automotive and pop culture in a way that no one else could,” noted Chris Prill, Global VP of eBay Motors. “We are deeply honoured to partner with the Block family and support Ken’s commitment to the community by connecting our enthusiasts to his legacy through these one-of-one pieces.”
And when he says ‘one-of-one’, he really means it. The collection is wonderfully eclectic, featuring everything from obviously collectible stuff like the Alpine Stars Race Suit worn in Gymkhana Nine or a (very cool) Fifteen52 wheel from the Escort Cosworth in Gymkhana Ten, to complete novelties like the damaged sequential gears from Hoonicorn V1 or the rear bumper of Ken’s personal Ford Raptor build. The auction opens today (April 3rd) and while it looks like only the branded t-shirt and hoodie commissioned for the auction are available for free shipping worldwide, everything else is attainable for the right amount of postage. Happy bidding, Block fans.
