Remember the Mercedes R-Class? It’s a niche model that was part SUV, part MPV and part executive chariot.
Well it appears that it was a niche too far and Mercedes has apparently admitted it was a mistake.
Leftlanenews.com has quoted Daimler sales executive Klaus Maier saying that the big Merc was ‘a lesson learned’.
Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche has also told trade publication Automotive News Europe that the car has ‘definitely not lived up’ to expectations.
Sales are reportedly down in the US and Maier said it was a mistake to assume such an unusual vehicle would have a wide appeal.
However Mercedes in the UK told PistonHeads that the R-Class was selling well and the diesel option is ‘in line with expectations’.
