Sports car brands are just businesses when it comes down to it, but when they bear the name of the individuals who founded them man and machine become inextricably linked. And whether it's Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Pagani, Koenigsegg or any number of others, these personalities help humanise the product and forge an emotional link for fans and owners.
Now, it may just be the fact I've taken delivery of the new PH Fleet McLaren (believe me, much, much more on this to come...) but that name I'm now sitting behind has taken on added resonance, not least because there's a film about the man who founded the original company. Most of us probably have a brief working knowledge of Bruce McLaren and his achievements - and they are incredible, even by the standards of the genre - and the fact they took place in such a short space of time before his tragically early death in one of his own cars.
Taking a cynical view you might argue that by promoting the film McLaren Automotive is seeking to cash in on the emotional capital of that link. And it's fair to say the 570GT I'm lucky enough to be driving has little to do with Bruce himself. Beyond trading on his name and bathing in his reflected glory. But in its ethos and the way it does business I think there is a reasonable link to be made between McLaren the car maker and McLaren the man and, as an 'owner', I'm happy to see that celebrated.
I haven't seen the film myself but I know someone who has and says it's brilliant. For now we have this trailer and a sense of anticipation for the full film.
