DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors are amongst companies to be pursued
through the US courts for by South African activists in a lawsuit related to
their participation in apartheid.
The suit has been filed in a the Brooklyn Federal Court and alleges that the
companies aided and abetted human rights abuses by trading in South Africa when
apartheid was in place. It's thought that billions of dollars in damages are
being sought.
The action is similar to one being brought by US lawyer Ed Fagan who
successfully won $100 billion from Swiss banks in a case relating to Holocaust
victims.
The South African Government has distanced itself from the action fearing
that it may jeopardise future business deals.
