Impressive hot hatch though the new Focus ST undoubtedly is, there was quite clearly scope for more excitement from the package, what with its 2.3-litre engine making more than 300hp in other installations. So, never ones to miss an opportunity, that's exactly what Mountune has done...
With just an upgraded air filter and the tuner's smartflash ECU technology - programmable via a smartphone app once installed - Mountune has raised the Focus ST's power and torque to 330hp at 5,500rpm and 380lb ft at 3,000rpm. So that's another 50hp and 70lb ft, for £600. Sounds like a bit of a bargain.
In addition, Mountune's m330 pack reconfigures the launch control - now set at a higher rpm - and released extra drama from the standard exhaust system. Which, as the video shows, translates into even more pops and bangs.
Given the limitations of front-wheel drive, it's somewhat incredible to note that Mountune claims the Focus can reach 60mph in 5.2 seconds (the standard model quoted at 0-62 in 5.7.) Expect even greater gains to come beyond that speed and through the gears, too. For some context, 380lb ft is more than an Audi RS3, a Mercedes-AMG A45 S and not far off an M2 Competition. When Mountune says the torque "completely transforms the driving experience", it's hard to argue. Particularly so given experience of the additional muscle grafted onto Fiestas and Focuses in the past.
The m330 kit for Mk4 Focus STs is available to buy from Mountune now, along with the cosmetic bits seen here on the demo car - plates, wheels, decals. When it's safe to leave our homes again we'll hope to get a drive; after all, Mountune does have quite the track record when it comes to getting the very best from fast Fords - fingers crossed that date isn't too far off!
