Porsche has released the first images of the new Porsche 911. The new car has subtle visual tweaks but the big news is the 911 gets Direct Fuel Injection and a double-clutch gearbox for the first time. There will be four new models in total – two coupes and two cabriolets – all with rear-wheel drive. They are powered by all-new flat-six motors displacing 3.6-litres (Carrera) and 3.8-litres (Carrera S), each with a power boost over the outgoing models. Maximum output of the 911 Carrera is up by 20 bhp to 345 bhp, while output on the 911 Carrera S increases by 30 bhp to 385 bhp. With this extra power, the Carrera S Coupé now offers a top speed of slightly over 186 mph.
The new generation of the 911 will be available with the new Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK), Porsche’s double-clutch gearbox. This ‘box offers seven forward gears and, according to Porsche, ‘combines the driving comfort of a converter automatic transmission with the dynamic gearshift of a sequential racing gearbox’. As PDK also has an automatic gearshift function, it replaces the former Porsche Tiptronic S automatic transmission on both the Carrera and Carrera S. Thanks to electronic trickery PDK improves the car’s acceleration and reduces fuel consumption to a level lower than before.
Porsche says it developed this twin clutch technology for racing 25 years ago and it enabled works drivers to accelerate faster than their competitors while keeping both hands on the steering wheel. Now, a quarter of a century on, similar technology allows the Carrera Coupe to reach 62mph from a standstill in 4.5 seconds, 0.2 seconds than with a manual six-speed ‘box. Using Porsche’s optional Sport Chrono Plus using Launch Control, PDK gets the car to 62mph in 4.3 seconds.
Visually the changes are minimal and include new LED lights front and rear, as well as bi-xenon headlights. The new 911 goes on sale in the UK on July 5. The Carrera 3.6-litre is priced from £63,070 and the Carrera S 3.8-litre is priced from £70,360. The 911 Carrera Cabriolet is priced from £70,360, the Cabriolet Carrera S from £77,650.
