If you want a good value exec motor, the Peugeot 607 looks the part -- it's always offered a pretty high spec as standard. But now the French company has decided to scrap the options list and include everything as standard. And it's dropped in a diesel, for good measure.
Peugeot’s new Euro 4 170bhp 2.2 litre twin turbo-charged HDi diesel engine produces 170bhp at only 4000 rpm, maximum torque of 277 lb ft produced at a slow 1,500 rpm.
Its use of sequential twin parallel turbochargers is a world first on a four-cylinder diesel car, reckons Peugeot. The system (patented with Honeywell Turbo Technology) consists of two identical, small-diameter turbochargers. Their low inertia and small size of the turbochargers reduce response time and improve throttle response. After the first starts to spin at low engine speeds, a second turbocharger operates in parallel between 2,600 and 3,200 rpm according to load and atmospheric conditions. The entire range of engine speeds is therefore covered. The system is controlled entirely by the engine’s ECU.
With the introduction of the new 170 bhp HDi engine, the 607 range now includes three engine options – 2.0 litre 136 bhp HDi, 2.2 litre 170 bhp HDi and a 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine. These engines are all available in a single trim level – Executive.
Colours are various shades of silver and grey, blue and black. And for what you get, the 607 looks like a bit of a bargain -- as long as you look only at the purchase price and not the depreciation.
