Police have dropped 200 speeding charges after allegations an officer rigged roadside checks – but do not plan to notify the rest of the motorists caught, it has been reported.
Last month we brought you news that Kent Police has launched a probe into allegations of rigged roadside checks.
According to Motorcycle News a serving Kent officer said that not everyone caught by the operator will be notified because ‘files are only kept for one year and the cost would be very significant’.
The insider told the publication: ‘If challenged they plan to roll over for each case and have a small fund to cover this.’
In April a Kent Police spokeswoman told PistonHeads that the issue came to light following a court case that was discontinued.
The spokeswoman said: ‘This led to a member of staff being suspended for reasons connected with the case, which related to one specific occasion.
‘As a precaution, the decision was made to discontinue 120 prosecutions which were still pending at that time.
MCN’s insider said that Kent Police hadn’t mentioned the cases related to a speed camera van operated by Kent and Medway Speed Camera Partnership – a detail which may help people establish whether they are affected.
