When a Porsche 911 goes pop, generally speaking, the bill isn't going to be cheap. So what are your options? Well traditionally you either bite the bullet, pay the bill and hope all is well for a few years, or scrap it. But there is a third option... In creating what is believed to be the first
Porsche 997
LS3 conversion in the world, this PHer has certainly taken an alternative route and challenged the norm. The original engine had a problem, so it was sold off to Hartech. The existing gearbox has been fitted with an adapter plate though, whilst the all-wheel drive system is kept to help put all that extra power down.
According to the OP, the LS3 is lighter than the Porsche unit, actually fits surprisingly well in the tight space, expects better fuel economy and, through its life, should cost less to service than the 997 engine. It seems the most difficult part of this build was understanding the Controller Area Network and making sure all instruments work as they did prior to the conversion.
Now turbocharged and producing 600hp, this 997 911 is going to be the ultimate Porsche sleeper. It may upset the purists, but it sounds like absolutely awesome project! Congratulations DT8R, your LS3 Porsche 911 is Our Reader's Car of the Week.
