Hyundai has "what were you thinking?" moment
While most of the world’s motoring press are busy ogling the new GTR in Tokyo, a number of interesting previews for this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas are beginning to divert our attention.
The show is one of the biggest annual events for tuners and manufacturers alike to show their wares and, thanks to its Stateside location, draws big crowds despite not actually being open to the public.
In recent years, the show has become a demonstration ground for new manufacturer models, which are disguised by hefty bodykits, ICE installations and pretty much anything else you’d expect to see on Pimp My Ride.
Honda is no exception, and will bring two tuned versions of next year’s Accord, while Hyundai has also gone to town on an estate version of an i30, still called Elantra in America, with a pretty ridiculous paint job.
Not to be outdone by the Asian market upstarts, domestic manufacturers have also turned on the “style”. Uncle Henry has opted to show a trio of Super Duty trucks; the most insane of these having a lowered rear truck bed for ease of loading motorbikes. Unfortunately this meant diverting all of the oomph from the 6.4-litre turbodiesel it’s powered with to the front wheels.
However, we can’t help but make the Dodge Avenger StormTrooper our star of the show so far. Powered by a 4.0-litre V6, and with an appropriately pumped up visual presence, the StormTrooper also contains two sci-fi inspired computers. The one for front passengers allows the driver to modify the engine’s characteristics, while the one in the rear allows people to play games, watch films or surf the internet.
