It's become a recurring theme over the past few years for certain classic cars to command, er, strong prices at auction. As in really quite daft prices actually, given what the cars actually are. In recent months the inexorable climb appeared to have slowed a little, with values levelling off. The weekend's Silverstone Auctions' sale would appear to suggest differently...
Let's deal with the Porsches first, as they've been the focus of so much discussion in classic car circles. Over the weekend - and you may want to sit down for this - a
964-era 911
993 Turbo
944 Turbo Cabriolet
for £25K. Crikey. That's really just a taster too, with all manner of old 911s going for big money.
Fast Fords have also enjoyed a meteoric rise, and that continued unabated at Silverstone. As your starter for 10 a Focus RS500, a car that's just seven years old, made £54,000. Fifty four grand! A Capri described as "the best Brooklands" that SA has ever seen sold at £55,125 and, yes, a Sierra Cosworth was bid up to £114,750. Makes a £30K Escort Mexico look like a bargain...
Other notable lots? There are plenty. Ferraris ranged from £22,500 for
this 400i
to half a million for Elton John's
old Daytona
(and expensive) 550M
bargain (!) 612
nice 308 GTS
In addition to those a 2002 Turbo made £70K, Rowan Atkinson's Defender has gone to a new owner for just under £50,000 and, yes, a Peugeot 205 GTI really did sell for £38,000. Madness. See the full lot list here, and prepare to be amazed.
