Fuel economy? Wassat then?
If you needed proof that not all US cars are gas-guzzlers, here it is.
In SAE’s Supermileage competition, which is part of the Collegiate Design series, the goal is to achieve the ultimate fuel economy from a four-stroke engine as donated by Briggs and Stratton.
This year’s event took place on 9 and 10 June at a proving ground in Marshall, Michigan. The vehicles had to travel 9.6 miles at a minimum average speed of 15mph.
The winner was Mater Dei High School from Indiana, whose vehicle extracted 1,836mpg, twice as much as the runner-up's 972mpg. What do they know that we don't?
Sadly, we couldn't find a photo of the winning vehicle -- but can you make do with one of the least economical US cars?
