A diesel Impreza has been talked about for some time, although we all thought the derv powered Subaru would be more suited the the family market rather than the performance driver.
However, the chances of us seeing a diesel WRX are ever increasing as both Autoblog and Autocar release stories claiming that a new WRXD will launch within the next two years.
Exact details are scarce as Subaru remain tight lipped, but a senior brand insider has revealed that he wants to sell a hot diesel version of the Impreza WRX here in the UK very soon, and is pressuring Japan to make it happen.
We will see an Impreza diesel later this year, powered by a version of the 2.0 boxer currently available in the US specification Legacy. The more powerful version will follow in two years time.
Despite the word 'diesel' and the phrase 'WRX' being unlikely partners, Subaru are mindful of forthcoming C02 based taxation as all of it's more powerful models fall into the highest rating of band G. A high performance diesel would fall into a lower band but will carry all the characteristics of previous WRX models, with 200bhp as standard.
