£39.98, £39.99...bugger £40.01
Motorists face more misery today as a tax rise increases the cost of fuel.
In many places the increase will push the cost per litre of petrol and diesel over the £1 mark.
The rise comes after the Government pushed through a 2.35p hike in fuel duty and there are another THREE planned over the next 18 months.
Gordon Brown announced the rise, the first in three years, in his last Budget as Chancellor.
But motoring organisations are urging the Government to think again.
The RAC Foundation says it would like to see a delay and a overhaul of fuel duty which would go down if the price of oil goes down.
The Treasury said last night that today’s increase would send 'the right environmental signals in our fight against climate change — while continuing to fund vital public services.'
