We have discussed timepieces a few times before on PH - the watches forum is of a fairly decent size with close to 200,000 posts. Cars and watches are a natural fit thanks to motorsport tie-ins but this may also skew people's judgements of either brand. Just because Breitling makes watches for Bentley or IWC for Mercedes it doesn't necessarily make either brand equal in terms of history or class. So the question falls to watch brands and the motoring equivalents. Can a Rolex be equivalent to a Porsche - seen on many wrists but mechanically well built and resistant to depreciation?
Patek Philippe uses the icky slogan "You never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation" while Rolls-Royce has boasted "At 60 miles an hour the loudest noise in the new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock". Are they of equivalent standings in their respective worlds? Is it acceptable to drive a hypercar but wear a cheap Casio? And what are the best matches of watch brand to carmaker?
