Traffic light plan seems to work
A scheme to reduce traffic congestion on the M1 has been given the go-ahead.
Some of the busiest sliproads in Leicestershire and Derbyshire are to be fitted with traffic lights.
The Highways Agency said lights would help prevent vehicles coming onto the motorway creating a bottleneck.
Similar systems on other UK motorway sliproads have reduced congestion and improve journey times by up to 9% officials said.
The system, known as ramp metering, will be installed on the northbound entry slip roads at Junctions 24, 28 and 29 and the southbound entry slip roads at junction 25 and 29.
Sensors in the road monitor the congestion and adjust the timing of the lights.
Work will begin on 4 February and the system should go live in the spring.
