VW buses were famously the choice of hippies in the mid-1960s, providing as they did enough room to embrace the love revolution whilst exploring an altered state of consciousness or two... And the cheap purchase price didn't hurt either when it came to cementing the reputation of Volkswagen as the maker of the people's cars.
Nowadays, the camper van has long since ceased production and restored split window models go for large sums of money. The badge of honour for people sticking it to the man has become the preserve of a somewhat wealthier strata of society. That hasn't stopped some owners from trying their hand at modifying the age-old design though. From fitting Porsche engines to provide a little extra grunt, to fitting tank tracks to make that go anywhere spirit a reality, there are plenty of remixes of the original out there.
This PHer was lucky enough to purchase one of the good ones. A T2 with an engine swap from a brand synonymous with rallying glory. Yes, his Camper is fitted with an EJ20 2.0-litre engine from a Subaru. It's connected to the original VW gearbox, with cooling issues sorted by fitting a radiator under the floor in the middle of the van - weight distribution any rally homologation would be proud of.
Hogg968 still has a few bits and pieces to clean up to get this T2 up to his standards, and we're looking forward to reading more about his exploits, but for now you can check out the full thread here.
